Plan Now to See Blue Ridge Parkway Fall Colors

Like the legendary Kancamangus Highway to the north of us, carving out the time to drive and enjoy the Blue Ridge Parkway fall colors is a bucket list item for many on the east coast and beyond. We know we’ve barely started to enjoy spring and are still looking forward to a fun and adventure-filled summer here in the Shenandoah Valley. Still, it’s truly never too early to plan your fall getaways along the Blue Ridge Parkway – it’s that popular!

Whether you drive the entire 469 miles (approximately an 8-hour trip!) all in one day or break the journey into multiple segments, witnessing the vibrant beauty of the Blue Ridge Parkway fall colors is an unforgettable experience. It’s truly a treat for the senses that goes beyond just being visually rewarding. The sights, sounds, and smells of fall along this top-rated scenic drive will be one memorable trip you won’t soon forget.

Of course, driving along the main highway is just one of the ways to enjoy the Blue Ridge Parkway fall colors. Below, we’ve listed five of our favorite ways to enjoy the best of fall on the Blue Ridge Parkway, all within easy reach of our Shenandoah Valley cabins.

  1. Blue Ridge Parkway waterfalls are popular attractions, and several are nearby. One of our favorites is Crabtree Falls, and fall is a great time to see it.
  2. One of the most popular places to experience the Blue Ridge Parkway fall colors near us is the Peaks of Otter area. This is a great spot to enjoy some hiking. We highly recommend hiking to the top of Sharp Top Mountain, where you’ll find a breathtaking 360-degree view of the Shenandoah Valley alight in the colorful fall hues.
  3. There are more hikes along the Blue Ridge Parkway worth considering, but another popular trail after the Peaks of Otter area is the Humpback Rocks Trail. It’s one of the longer trails in the area, at 7.8 miles roundtrip. It’s delightful in the fall!
  4. For classic pastoral views of the Shenandoah Valley, consider hiking the nearly 2-mile Johnson Farm Trail. Here, you’ll also see a beautifully restored farmhouse, antique farm equipment, a historic bar, and more.
  5. Though the Blue Ridge Parkway fall colors are what bring most people to this area in the fall, it’s also a great time to pick apples and enjoy the agricultural bounty of the Shenandoah Valley. Our Shenandoah Valley cabins are near several apple orchards. Pick some apples and enjoy a quintessential afternoon in the Valley.
